What is Diabetes
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose (blood sugar) is too high. The disease develops when your pancreas doesn’t make enough hormone insulin or use it properly. The insulin helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy.
There are 2 main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t produce any insulin. It is often called juvenile diabetes as it is usually found more in children and teenagers than adults. Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use the insulin as it should.
Due to the increase in overweight and less physically active children in the Unites States, type 2 is on the rise.
There is a third type or category of diabetes called Pre-diabetes, which develops when blood sugar levels rise higher than normal levels, but not high enough to officially be diagnosed as diabetes. This condition can easily develop into type 2 diabetes. However, if you have Pre-diabetes, you can prevent or delay the onset of full-blown type 2 diabetes by making lifestyle changes, like eating a healthy diet, dieting to reach and maintain a healthy weight, and of course the taboo term “exercise regularly”.
